Book of Revelation – Bible Study – Chapter 21

The Book of Revelation Chapter 21”

Introduction: In this lesson we are going to study the messages of Jesus Christ that He gave to the Apostle John about chapter twenty-one. Now the New Jerusalem (Heaven) is the dwelling place that will be throughout all eternity for the Saints of all ages and the hope of Abraham for the Heavenly city to live with their God forever and ever. The New Jerusalem is pictured as a stationary city floating above the Earth in space. Now who will dwell in this shining city of the Heavenly stars? 1) There will be God the Father. (Revelation 4:2-4) 2) There will be Jesus the Son. (Revelation 5:6) 3) There will be the Holy Spirit. (Revelation 14:13) 4) There will be the Holy and the elect Angels. (Revelation 5:11) 5) There will be the 24 Elders. (Revelation 4:4) 6) There will be the Saved Israel. (Revelation 14:1-3) 7) There will be the Church. (Revelation 19:1) 8) There will be all the Redeemed that ever lived. (Revelation 7:9-10) Now our Lord and Savior has said that God will wipe away all the tears from our eyes and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, no crying, there will no more pain; for all the former things are passed away. We will not be bored in Heaven because we will be learning and serving God and singing praises to Him for all He has done for all mankind.

Revelation Chapter 21:

I) (The New Heaven, the New Earth, and the New Jerusalem)

(All Things are made New) (Revelation 21:1-8)

1) (Read) (Chapter 21:1); And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. (KJV) (Read) (Isaiah 65:17); and (Isaiah 66:22)

1) Explanation: (Chapter 21:1);  And I saw a new heaven and a new earth. (The word “New” in the Greek is “kainos,” and means “freshness with respect to age”; when it is finished, it will be new, but the idea is it will remain new and fresh forever and forever because there is no more sin). For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away. (This refers to the original Creation, which was marred by sin; and “passed away” in the Greek is “parerchomai,” and means “to pass from one condition to another”; it never means annihilation).  And there was no more sea. (Now this refers to the giant oceans, such as the Pacific and the Atlantic. But there will be lakes, bodies of water like the rivers and streams).

1) Comments: (Chapter 21:1); John tells us that the first Heaven and the new earth are replaced by a new Heaven and a new earth. Now this was predicted by (Isaiah 65:17) in the Old Testament. There will not be any more sea. John also tells us, because the present universe will be cleaned from all sin and the land increased here will be capable of handling large numbers of redeemed people from all ages. (Read); (II Peter 3:7); and verses 10 through 13). Now the as we know it will not last forever, but after God’s great judgment, He will create a New Earth. (Romans 8:18-21), (II Peter 3:7-13) Also God has promised Isaiah that he would create a New and Eternal Earth. Now there will be a new heaven and a new earth. The ancient Jews believed that God would renew the heavens and the earth at the end of seven thousand years. The general supposition they founded on. There was no more sea. The sea no more appeared than did the first heaven and earth. All was made new; and probably the new sea occupied a different position and was differently distributed, from that of the old sea.

2) (Read) (Chapter 21:2); And I John saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. (KJV) (Read) (Isaiah 52:1); and (Isaiah 54:5)

2) Explanation: (Chapter 21:2); And I John saw the holy city, New Jerusalem. (The Apostle John said that he saw the Holy City, New Jerusalem, now this is the New City for this New Earth). And the “New Heaven” came down from God out of heaven. (Now we see here that God will change His dwelling place from Heaven to Earth). And it was prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. (Now this proclaims the Eternal Home of the Redeemed as a dwelling place for His Bride.

2) Comments: (Chapter 21:2); John tells us that he saw a New Jerusalem being prepared for the bride the (Church) for her husband Jesus Christ. The New Jerusalem is fully described in (Revelation 21:10), and, (Revelation 22:5). Now the New Jerusalem is a Holy city, totally separate from sin. Now New Jerusalem is being prepared as the habitation of the bride of Jesus Christ. In (John 14:2-3) Our Lord Jesus said; “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you.” I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. This doubtless means the Christian Church in a state of great prosperity and purity; but some think eternal blessedness are intended. Now the Coming down from God; It is a maxim of the ancient Jews that both the tabernacle, and the temple, and Jerusalem itself, came down from heaven. Jeremiah said, “The holy blessed God shall renew the world, and build Jerusalem, and shall cause it to descend from heaven.” And their opinion is, that there is a spiritual temple, a spiritual tabernacle, and a spiritual Jerusalem; and that none of these can be destroyed.

3) (Read) (Chapter 21:3); And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. (KJV)

3) Explanation: (Chapter 21:3); And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying. (Now according to John, the Voice that he heard was “out of the Throne”. Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. (Now this is what our God intended from the beginning of time).

3) Comments: (Chapter 21:3); John simply tells that the presence of God will be with his people. And God will forever dwell with them and be their God. Now the New Jerusalem is where God lives among his people. Instead of our going to meet him, he comes down to be with us, just as God became man in Jesus Christ and lived among us (John 1:14). Now where ever God reigns, there will be peace, security, and love.

4) (Read) (Chapter 21:4); And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. (KJV)

(Read) (Revelation 7:17); and (Revelation 21:3-4); (Now the phrase: “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes”) is only found in the Bible two times.)

4) Explanation: (Chapter 21:4); And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. (Now the Apostle John said that God will wipe away all our tears from our eyes, and in the Greek says that “every teardrop”, and also refers to tears of sorrow). And there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain. (Now this here addresses all sin and all its results that has ever happen in the world). For the former things are passed away. (John says here that the former things are gone, which refers to all the things of sin that cause the “Fall of Man” from the beginning of time until now).

4) Comments: (Chapter 21:4); John writes here that there will be no tears, no death, no sorrow, no crying and no pain because everything will become new. Now have you ever wondered what eternity will be like? The “Holy City, the New Jerusalem” is described as a place where our God will “wipe every tear from our eyes.” And because God said that all former things are passed away to be remembered no more. What a blessing that will be to all those that have endured trials and tribulations here on earth. “Forever more, there will be no death, no pain, no sorrow, and no crying. Oh what a wonderful truth!

And no matter what you are going through, it’s not the last word but God has written the final chapter, and it is about true fulfillment and eternal joy for all of those who love him. Now we do not know as much as we would like, but it is enough to know that eternity with our God will be more wonderful than we could ever imagine.

5) (Read) (Chapter 21:5); And he that sat upon the “throne” said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. (KJV) (Read) (Revelation 4:2); and (Revelation 20:11); (Revelation 19:9); and (Revelation 22:6)

5) Explanation: (Chapter 21:5); And he that sat upon the throne said. (Now this presents, for the second time in this Great Book, that God Himself as the Speaker). Behold, I make all things new. (Now God said, “I will make all things new”, and this refers to the fact that He will change all things from one condition to another). And he said unto me, Write, for these words are true and faithful. (Now here God said to John that he was to write these words that are “True and Faithful”, because God is true and He will be faithful to bring it all to pass as well).

5) Comments: (Chapter 21:5); John writes here that God is the one on the throne and we can always say that God’s promises are true, and God is always faithful to his Word. (Now the word “Throne here” is a seat of with authority, such as a King and certainly our Lord Jesus Christ is a King of Kings and Lord of Lords to all of us who have received Him as our Savior. Now God (Jehovah) is the Creator of all things. The Bible begins with the majestic story of his creation of the universe, and He concludes with his creation of a New Heaven and a New Earth. There is a tremendous hope and encouragement for all believers in Christ. Now when we are with our God, and with our sins forgiven and our future secured, we will be like Jesus Christ. Then we will be made perfect like him. God did make a new Heaven and Earth just as He promised. (Read) (Revelation 19:11)

6) (Read) (Chapter 21:6); And he said unto me, “It is done.” I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the “fountain of the water of life freely”. (KJV) (Read) (John 4:14); (Isaiah 55:1); and (Revelation 21:6);

6) Explanation: (Chapter 21:6); And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. (Now God Almighty said to John, “IT IS DONE”, and this mighty declaration “IT IS FINISHED”, was heard at the morning of Creation, at Calvary, and now repeated here for the last time, which closes all prophecy. Now what He began, He now finishes). I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

(Now this statement does not pertain to the coming Perfect Age, for all of them will have the Water of Life”, but rather to the present. This “Fountain of the Water of Life” is tied directly to the Cross of Calvary in that it is free to all who will believe. (John 3:16)

6) Comments: (Chapter 21:6); Now the Apostle John simply writes that there is no temple in the city because both the Father (God) and the Son (Jesus) will be present in their fullest manifestations and they are the Temple. (Here is a little history about John). When John had attained a great age of one-hundred years old, he was so feeble that he could not walk to the assemblies of the church; therefore John had to be carried into the church by the young men. John was no longer able to say much, but he constantly repeated the words, (Little children, love one another.) John was asked why he constantly repeated this one saying and he replied to them. (Because it is the command of the Lord; and enough is done if this is done). (This is true)

7) (Read) (Chapter 21:7); He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (KJV) (Read) (John 7:37-38);

7) Explanation: (Chapter 21:7); He that overcometh shall inherit all things. (Now the only way that one can overcome is to place one’s Faith exclusively in the Cross of Jesus Christ, which gives the Holy Spirit latitude to work in one’s life, and this brings about the Fruit of the Spirit). And I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (Now the overcomer is adopted into the family of God and God treats him as a son, exactly as He does His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ).

7) Comments: (Chapter 21:7); John tells us that He that overcomes shall inherit all things and God said that He will be his God and he will be my son. Now just as a bride is an equal inheritor of all that is her husband’s and so the church, which is the Bride of Jesus Christ, will inherit all that is his. Now once again, God even promises that He will be our God and we shall be His son. Here he had no inheritance; and there he shall inherit the kingdom of heaven, and be with God and Christ, and have every possible degree of blessedness. Now he who overcomes and “stand firm to the end” (Mark 13:13).

II) (Now they will receive the blessings that God promised). Please read the “Blessing” below.

1) They will eat from the tree of life (Revelation 2:7).

2) They will escape from the lake of fire (the “second death),” (Revelation 2:11).

3) They will receive a special name in (Revelation 2:17).

4) They will have authority over the nations (Revelation 2:26).

5) They will be included in the book of life (Revelation 3:5).

6) They will be a pillar in God’s spiritual temple (Revelation 3:12).

7) They will be sitting with Christ on His throne (Revelation 3:21).

8) Now to follow Jesus Christ requires boldness and bravery to stand for him when the oppression comes. We should always pray for courage to do what is right no matter what pressure you face. We should keep in mind the Heavenly rewards of Christ so that you won’t be tempted to turn away. Now those who can endure the testing of evil and remain faithful will be rewarded by God himself.

8) (Read) (Chapter 21:8); But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: “which is the second death.” (KJV)

8) Explanation: (Chapter 21:8); But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars. (Now all of this is sin which God hates, and all of this corresponds with the “works of the flesh,” and is outlined in (Galatians 5:19-21). And they shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Now this proclaims the “Eternal Destiny” of all of those who reject Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and what He did on the Cross).

8) Comments: (Chapter 21:8); Here John tells us that there will be no wise enter into Heaven and not any things that defileth Heaven. (Revelation 21:8); (Revelation 22:15); below is a list of all types of people that will not have a home in Heaven. But first of all Satan and his angels, and all those, who have not accepted Jesus as their personal savior will never have a home in Heaven. Now our God has prepared a place in the Lake of Fire for the Satan and his Angel. The Apostle John tells us also that all the others that are listed below will not have a home in Heaven. (Read) (Revelation 20:14); and (Revelation 20:6): Now the phrase: “which is the second death” is the final death or the incarceration into the lake of fire for all of those who have rejected God’s great salvation plan and were not saved.

III) (Now once again, the ones that are listed below are the people that would not ACCEPT JESUS AS THEIR SAVIOR! (AND THEY ARE.)

A) The scripture tells us all the fearful ones will not have a home in Heaven in (Revelation 21:8)

B) All the unbelieving ones will not be in Heaven we can read this in (Revelation 21:8).

C) All the abominable ones will not be in Heaven we can read this in (Revelation 21:8).

D) All the murderers will not be in Heaven we can read this in (Revelation 21:8).

E) All the whoremongers will not be in Heaven we can read this in (Revelation 21:8).

F) All the sorcerers will not be in Heaven we can read this in (Revelation 21:8).

G) All the Idolaters will not be in Heaven we can read this in (Revelation 21:8).

H) All the Liars will not be in Heaven we can read this in (Revelation 21:8).

IV) (The Lamb’s Wife; the New Jerusalem) (Revelation 21:9-21)

9) (Read) (Chapter 21:9); And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife. (KJV)

9) Explanation: (Chapter 21:9); And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will show thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife. (Now here the Apostle John said that one of the Angels said to him, Come hither, and I will show you the “Lamb’s Wife”, and here by the word “Lamb,” we are taken back to the Cross, which has made all of this possible by the shedding of His Blood and giving His Life for all).

9) Comments: (Chapter 21:9); In verse nine the Apostle John said that one of the Angels came to him and said, come hither, and I will show you the “Lamb’s Wife”. Now just who is the Lamb’s Wife? Now the Word of God tells us that the Bride, which is the Church in (Revelation 19:1-8); and (Revelation 21:9-11); and all the redeemed Saints that ever lived are the Lamb’s Bride. (Revelation 5:9); and (Revelation 7:9-10). The bride, and the Lamb’s wife is the pure and holy Christian Church.

10) (Read) (Chapter 21:10); And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, (KJV)

10) Explanation: (Chapter 21:10); And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain. (Now the “Spirit” that carried John away to a great and high mountain is referred to here as the Holy Spirit). And showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. (Now the Apostle John saw it “descending,” means that it is coming down to Earth; and this will be after the Lord Jesus Christ has made the “New Heaven and New Earth,” in fact that’s when God changes His dwelling place from Heaven to Earth).

10) Comments: (Chapter 21:10); Now the location of the New Jerusalem is pictured above the earth as a stationary city floating above the earth in space. Now this new earth will become a satellite plant encircling the starry capital, from which earth will receive its light in (Revelation 21:24-26). (This iswhen God changes His dwelling place from Heaven to Earth). Now only the redeemed saints and glorified people will have access to dwell in the New Jerusalem which is called Heaven.

11) (Read) (Chapter 21:11); Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; (KJV)

11) Explanation: (Chapter 21:11); Having the glory of God: (Now this is what makes this “New City” what it is). And her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. (Now this precious light will present the radiance of all of God’s Glory).

11) Comments: (Chapter 21:11); Now the city, the Holy Jerusalem is where the bride of our Lord Jesus Christ the (Church) will live forever. This Holy city is the presence of God’s glory, which personifies our God’s presence with His people. Now the glory that departed from the Old Jerusalem is restored to the New Jerusalem of the future forever. (Ezekiel chapters 8-11) Now having the glory of God; instead of the sun and moon, it has the splendor of God to enlighten it. Here in Heaven this stone is most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. Among precious stones there are some even of the same species more valuable than others. For their value is in proportion; to their being free from a flaws; and of a good water and is uniform and brilliant transparency. A crystal is perfectly clear. And the oriental jasper is a beautiful sea-green. The stone that is here described is represented as a perfectly transparent jasper, being as unclouded as the brightest crystal, and consequently the most precious of its species. Nothing can be finer than this description: the light of this city is ever intense, equal, and splendid; but it is tinged with this green hue, in order to make it agreeable to the sight.

Nothing is so friendly to the eye as blue or green; all other colors fatigue; and, if very intense, injure the eye. These are the colors of the earth and sky, on which the eye of man is to be constantly fixed. To these colors the structure of the eye is adapted; and the general appearance of the earth and the sky is adapted to this structure.

12) (Read) (Chapter 21:12); And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: (KJV)

12) Explanation: (Chapter 21:12); And had a wall great and high, (Now this great wall is 216 feet high, if we count 18 inches to be a cubit). And there were had twelve gates. (The twelve gates signifies that there are three gates on the North, three gates on the South, three gates on the East, and three gates on the West. Now the gates on each side will be about 375 miles apart from each other). And at the gates were twelve Angels. (Now these twelve Angels at the gates will proclaim the Glory of the City, and also the Glory of God’s Government). And names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel. Now this proclaims the fact that “the Lamb’s Wife” is made up of every single Believer, whether on this side or the other side of the Cross; and every gate will have the name of one of the “Twelve Tribes”; and this tells us just how precious Israel is to the “Heart of God).”

12) Comments: (Chapter 21:12); This New Jerusalem is a picture of our God’s future home for his people. Now the names of the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles are in the foundations and the gates of the city indicates that both Jewish and the Gentile believers will all be part of the family of God. But both believing Gentiles and the Jews who have been faithful to God (Jehovah) will live together and share all eternity as one.  Now there was a great high wall for the almighty defense. And there were twelve gates: A gate for every tribe of Israel, in the vicinity of which a gate for each tribe dwelt. This was so that; in coming in and going out they did not mix with each other. This description of the city is partly taken from Synopsis Sohar; it is said: “In the palace of the world to come there are twelve gates. And each of which is inscribed with one of the twelve tribes, as that of Reuben, of Simeon, received into none of the twelve gates but his own; and so of the rest.”

13) (Read) (Chapter 21:13);  On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. (KJV)

13) Explanation: (Chapter 21:13); On the east three gates. (Now on these three east gates will probably have the names of Joseph, Benjamin, and Dan). And on the north three gates. (Now on these three north gates will probably have the names of Reuben, Judah, and Levi).

And on the south three gates will probably have the names of Simeon, Issachar, and Zebulun). And on the west three gates. (Now on the three west gates will probably have the names of Gad, Asher, and Naphtli).

13) Comments: (Chapter 21:13); Now this description of the high walls and twelve gates echoes in the Old Testament in (Ezekiel 48:30-35) about a glorious picture of the place that all Israel holds in the New Jerusalem city. But we also know that each gate is made of pearl and they will not be shut by day there. Now on the east three gates the city is here represented as standing to the four cardinal points of heaven, and presenting one side to each of these points.

14) (Read) (Chapter 21:14); And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. (KJV)

14) Explanation: (Chapter 21:14); And the wall of the city had twelve foundations. (Now the way of Salvation was shown to the Jews, hence, and the gates and the names of the Twelve Tribes inscribed on those gates; however, the foundation of Salvation was not really given until after the Cross, because it could not be given until after the Cross). And in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. (Now on each foundation is the name of one of the Twelve Apostles. The foundation of the Salvation Message is based one hundred percent on Jesus Christ and the Cross and also the use of the word of the Lamb).

14) Comments: (Chapter 21:14); Now John said that the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and also this wall had the names of the Apostles of the Lamb on it. The walls were measure to a distance of 216 feet high and they were made of Jasper. (Read) (Revelation 21:12); (Revelation 21:17-18) Now the wall had twelve foundations; and probably these twelve stones; are one of which served for a foundation or threshold to each gate. And on these were inscribed the names of the twelve apostles, to intimate that it was by the doctrine of the apostles that souls enter into the Church, and thence into the New Jerusalem.

15) (Read) (Chapter 21:15); And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. (KJV)

15) Explanation: (Chapter 21:15); And he that talked with me. (Now this is not the Angel who talked with John in verse nine; but the one now speaking identifies himself as a Prophet in (Revelation 22:9). And he had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. (Now this measuring is done for a reason. Now it reveals the perfection, the fulfillment, and the completion of all God’s purposes for His Redeemed People).

15) Comments: (Chapter 21:15); In verse fifteen the Apostle John said that the one that talk with him had a golden reed to measure the city, the gates, and the wall of the city. Now the city’s measurements are symbolic of a place that will hold all of God’s people. These measurements are multiples by the number 12, the number for God’s people. Now there were 12 tribes in Israel, and the 12 Apostles, who started the church. Now the walls are (12×12) that equals (144 cubits) which is (216 feet) thick. There are 12 layers in the walls, and 12 gates in the city; and the length, the width, and the height are all the same which means that (12,000 furlongs, would equal 1500 miles in our measurements today). Now the New Jerusalem is a perfect cube, and this same shape as the “Most Holy Place” in the temple in (I Kings 6:20). Now we can say that these measurements will illustrate that this new home will be perfect for all believers in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

16) (Read) (Chapter 21:16); And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. (KJV)

16) Explanation: (Chapter 21:16); And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. (Now each twelve thousand furlongs are translated into about 1,500 miles per-side). The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. (Now this presents astounding dimensions. Now Heaven is about half the size of the United States, regarding the length and breadth, which is 1,500 miles each also. Now if that is not enough to take one’s breadth away and it will also be 1,500 miles tall. Now our minds we cannot comprehend this, but our Faith believes).

16) Comments: (Chapter 21:16); There are 12 layers in the walls, and 12 gates in the city; and the length, the width, and the height are all the same which means that (12,000 furlongs, would equal 1500 miles in our measurements today). Now the New Jerusalem is a perfect cube, and this same shape as the “Most Holy Place” in the temple in (I Kings 6:20). Now we can say that these measurements will illustrate that this new home will be perfect for all believers in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

16) Extra-Comments: The city lieth foursquare and each side was equal, consequently the length and breadth were equal; and its height is here said to be equal to its length. It is hard to say how this should be understood. It cannot mean the height of the buildings, nor of the walls, for neither houses nor walls could be twelve thousand furlongs in height. Some think this means the distance from the plain country to the place where the city stood. But what need is there of attempting to determine such measures in such a visionary representation? The quadr-angular form intimates its perfection and stability. And for the square figure was a figure of perfection among the Greeks; the square or cubical man, was, with them, a man of unsullied integrity and perfect in all things.

17) (Read) (Chapter 21:17); And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. (KJV)

17) Explanation: (Chapter 21:17); And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits. (Now this translates into about 216 feet, and that is if we are using 18 inches to the cubit. Now this means that this wall is actually 216 feet high). According to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. (Now the designation of “Angel” is sometimes given to men, God, and the Creatures we refer to as Angels.

17) Comments: (Chapter 21:17); Now John said that the wall was measured thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. Now this wall was measured about 216 feet high and was made of Jasper. (Revelation 21:12); and (Revelation 21:17-18).  Now the wall is a hundred and forty and four cubits. This is twelve, and the number of the apostles, multiplied by itself. Now twelve times twelve make one hundred and forty-four. The measure of a man, that is, of the angel. The cubit, so called from cubitus, the elbow, is the measure from the tip of the elbow to the tip of the middle finger, and is generally reckoned at one foot and a half, or eighteen inches; though it appears, from some measurements at the pyramids of Egypt, that the cubit was, at least in some cases, twenty-one inches. By the cubit of a man we may here understand the ordinary cubit, and that this was the Angel’s cubit who appeared in the form of a man. Or suppose we understand the height of the man as being here intended, and that this was the length of the measuring rod. Now allowing this height and rod to be six feet, and that this was intended to have some kind of symbolical reference to the twelve tribes, mentioned and, represented by the twelve gates; and to the twelve apostles, represented by the twelve thresholds or foundations. Then twenty-four, the number of the tribes and apostles, multiplied by six, make precisely the number one hundred and forty-four.

18) (Read) (Chapter 21:18); And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. (KJV)

18) Explanation: (Chapter 21:18); And the building of the wall of it was of jasper. (Now this building of the wall of it was of jasper, and this presents a precious stone of several colors). And the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. (Now this City of pure gold, and is clear as glass, take us beyond the imagination and beyond comprehension! But yet this is literally real).

18) Comments: (Chapter 21:18); In verse eighteen John said that the building of the walls of it was of Jasper and the city was pure gold, like unto a clear glass. Now this is a picture of the walls that were made of jewels that reveals the New Jerusalem and it will be a place of purity and durability. Now remember, whatever God builds it will last forever. The building of the wall of it was made of jasper. The oriental jasper is exceedingly hard, and almost indestructible. Now the pillars were made of this stone and will have lasted some thousands of years, and appear to have suffered scarcely anything from the test of time. Now pure gold, is like unto clear glass. Does not this imply that the walls were made of some beautifully bright yellow stone, very highly polished? This description has been most injudiciously applied to heaven; and in some public discourses, for the comfort and edification of the pious, we hear of heaven with its golden walls, and golden pavements, and gates of pearl, and that nothing of this description was ever intended to be literally understood. And that gold and jewels can have no place in the spiritual and eternal world. But do not such descriptions as these tend to keep up a fondness for gold and ornaments? In symbols they are proper; but construed into realities, they are very improper. The ancient Jews teach that “when Jerusalem and the temple shall be built, they will be all of precious stones, and pearls, and sapphire, and with every species of jewels.”

13) (Read) (Chapter 21:19); And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones.  The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; (KJV)

19) Explanation: (Chapter 21:19); And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. (Now this foundation with all its manner of precious stones just describes the beauty upon beauty that will be in Heaven). The first foundation was jasper. (Now the “first foundation was inlaid with Jasper,” that looks like a crystal clear diamond, and it is as bright as a transparent icicle in the sunshine). The second, sapphire; (Now the “second foundation was inlaid with Sapphire,” which looks like a blue opaque stone with gold specks through it). The third, a chalcedony; (Now the “third foundation was inlaid with chalcedony,” and this looks like a sky-blue stone with stripes of other colors running through it). The fourth, an emerald; (Now the “fourth foundation was inlaid with emerald,” with a bright green stone).

19) Comments: (Chapter 21:19); Now Apostle John tells us that the foundations of the walls of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. Just how many foundations are there in Heaven? (Revelation 21:14); and (Revelation 21:19-20) Now first there are 12 foundations in Heaven and in them are the names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb. Now these foundations are inlaid with 12 different precious gems or beautiful stones.  They are listed below:

A) The first foundation is inlaid with Jasper, a crystal clear diamond, as bright as a transparent icicle in the sunshine.  (Revelation 21:18-19)

B) The second foundation is inlaid with Sapphire, a blue opaque stone with gold specks. (Revelation 21:19)

C) The third foundation is inlaid with Chalcedony, a sky blue stone with stripes of other colors running through it. (Revelation 21:19)

D) The fourth foundation is inlaid with Emerald, a bright green stone. (Revelation 21:20); and (Revelation 4:3)

20) (Read) (Chapter 21:20); The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth;  the twelfth, an amethyst. (KJV)

20) Explanation: (Chapter 21:20); The fifth sardonyx, (Now the “fifth foundation was inlaid with a sardonyx,” and it had a white stone with layers of red on it). The sixth sardius, (Now the “sixth foundation was inlaid with a sardius” and this was a fiery red stone). The seventh chrysolite, (Now the “seventh foundation was inlaid with chrysolyte,” and had a transparent golden yellow stone on it). The eighth beryl, (Now the “eighth foundation was inlaid with beryl,” and had a sea green stone on it). The ninth topaz, (Now the “ninth foundation was inlaid with topaz,” which was a transparent golden green stone on it). the tenth chrysoprase, (Now the tenth foundation was inlaid with chrysoprasus”, that had a blue green stone on it). The eleventh jacinth, (Now the “eleventh foundation was inlaid with jacinth,” and this was a violet stone on it). And the twelfth amethyst. (Now the “twelfth foundation was inlaid with amethyst,” and had a flashing purple stone on it).

20) Comments: (Chapter 21:20); Now Apostle John tells us that the other six foundations of the walls of the city were garnished also with all manner of precious stone. And these last six Precious stones are described below.

A) The fifth foundation is inlaid with Sardonyx, a white stone with layers of Red. (Revelation 21:20)

B) The sixth foundation is inlaid with Sarduis, a fiery red stone. (Revelation 21:20); and (Revelation 4:3)

C) The seventh foundation is inlaid with Chrysolyte, a transparent golden yellow stone.  (Revelation 21:20)

D) The eighth foundation is inlaid with Beryl, a sea-green stone. (Revelation 21:20)

E) The ninth foundation is inlaid with Topaz, a transparent golden green stone. (Revelation 21:20)

F) The tenth foundation is inlaid with Chrysoprasus, a blue-green stone. (Revelation 21:20)

G) The eleventh foundation is inlaid with Jacinth, a violet stone. (Revelation 21:20); and (Revelation 9:17)

H) The twelfth foundation is inlaid with Amethyst, a flashing purple stone. (Revelation 21:20)

21) (Read) (Chapter 21:21); And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. (KJV)

21) Explanation: (Chapter 21:21); And the twelve gates were twelve pearls. (Now these twelve gates were twelve pearls and that means that each gate, which is about 216 feet high and are made of an untold amount of pearls and that could be thousands of pearls for each gate).

Now every gate was made of one pearl. (Now this seems to indicate that this particular gate, which is probably every third or fourth one, is made out of one gigantic pearl). And the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. (Now this refers to the fact that not only are all the buildings of “pure gold,” in (Revelation 21:18), Also even the streets are made of pure gold).

21) Comments: (Chapter 21:21); Now Apostle John tells us that there are 12 gates. Now there are 3 gates on the North, there are 3 on the South, there are 3 gates on East, and there are 3 gates on the West. Now on each gate is the name of one of the tribes of Israel. Each gate is guarded by an Angel. Now each gate is made of a beautiful white pearl stone and these gates will never be closed. (Revelation 21:12-13); (Revelation 21:25); Now each gate is made of a perfect pearl and this is the one jewel that sets forth the Church. “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls; who when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.” (Matthew 13:45-46) Now here the Church is the pearl of a great price.

IV) (The Glory of the New Jerusalem) (Revelation 21:22-27)

22) (Read) (Chapter 21:22); And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. (KJV)

22) Explanation: (Chapter 21:22); And I saw no temple therein. (Now this refers to a Temple such as in the Old Testament times; actually there is a literal Temple in the New Jerusalem, but it will not serve the same purpose as the Temple on Earth). (Revelation 3:12); (Revelation 7:15); (Revelation 11:19); (Revelation 14:15); (Revelation 15:1-8); (Revelation 16:1); For the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. (Now before the Cross, a Temple on Earth was necessary because God could not dwell with man at that time, at least directly). Now sense the Cross, the Holy Spirit can dwell within man, because the terrible sin debt has been paid. (John 14:17); (I Corinthians 3:16)

22) Comments: (Chapter 21:22); In verse twenty-two John said that he saw no Temple in Heaven because the Lord God and the Lamb are the Temple of it. Now there will be no need for a temple in Heaven to provide a means for a man to fellowship with our God (Jehovah). Now because of Jesus Christ, sacrificial death on the Cross, sin will not exist in His Temple. Now our God and the Lamb are the Temple of this eternal city. Now this clearly emphasizes the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ as equal in essence to that of our Father in Heaven.

23) (Read) (Chapter 21:23); And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. (KJV)

23) Explanation: (Chapter 21:23); And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it. (Now this proclaims the fact that the Creator is not in need of His Creation; God has need of nothing, but all have a need of God). For the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. (Now the word “Lamb” signifies that all of this is made possible for Believers as a result of what Jesus Christ did at the Cross).

23) Comments: (Chapter 21:23); The Apostle John simply said that the city had no need of the sun, and no moon, to shine in it, because the “glory of God” did lighten it, and “the Lamb” is the light in Heaven. (Revelation 21:23); and (Revelation 22:5). And remember there shall be no night there; and they will need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever. And because of this, there will be no night there. (Revelation 21:25); and (Revelation 22:5)

24) (Read) (Chapter 21:24); And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. (KJV)

24) Explanation: (Chapter 21:24); And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it. (Now this should have been translated. “And the nations shall walk by means of its light”. Now the words “of them which are saved” are not actually in the best manuscripts; in fact, there will be no one in the world in that day who isn’t saved). And the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honor into it. (Now this refers to leaders of nations, whatever they might be called at that particular time. Now all will give Glory to God and all will Honor the Lord Jesus Christ, and do so forever).

24) Comments: (Chapter 21:24); Now John said the nations (people) of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it, and the kings of earth do bring their glory and honor into it. Now the reference to “nations” reminds us that our national distinctions and our personal appearances are God-given. Now in (Revelation 7:9); this refers to “(a great multitude of all nations).” And in (Revelation 5:10) refers to believers as “Kings and Priests” who will reign with our Lord Jesus Christ.

25) (Read) (Chapter 21:25); And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. (KJV)

25) Explanation: (Chapter 21:25); And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day. (Now the gates will never be shut). For there shall be no night there. (Now there will be no night there because Jesus Christ will be the light. This speaks of the City only, but for outside the City there will be day and night eternally. (Genesis 1:14-18) (Genesis 8:22) (Psalms 89:2-3) (Jeremiah 31:35-36).

25) Comments: (Chapter 21:25); Now John said that the Gates of Heaven shall not be shut at all by day; for there shall be no night there. And because there was no night there; neither, any light from the sun, for the Lord God will give them light, and they shall reign for ever and ever. (Read) (Revelation 22:5) The gates of it shall not be shut at all. The Christian Church shall ever stand open to receive sinners of all sorts, degrees, and nations. There shall be no night there. And there will be No more idolatry, no intellectual darkness; the Scriptures shall be everywhere to read, the pure word everywhere preached, and the Spirit of God shall shine and work in every heart.

26) (Read) (Chapter 21:26); And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. (KJV)

26) Explanation: (Chapter 21:26); And they shall bring the glory and honor of the nations into it. (Now this proclaims a Righteous commerce, and in every capacity).

26) Comments: (Chapter 21:26); Now here the Apostle John tells us that they (meaning the Church) will bring glory and honor into the New city Jerusalem. Now the New Jerusalem is the dwelling place throughout all eternity for the Saints of all ages and fulfills the hope of Abraham for the Heavenly city. (Read) (Hebrews 11:10-16); and (Hebrews 12:22-24)

27) (Read) (Chapter 21:27); And there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither, whatsoever worketh abomination or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. (KJV)

27) Explanation: (Chapter 21:27); And there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither, whatsoever worketh abomination or maketh a lie. (Now this means that all sin is forever banished, and will never return). But they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. (Now this refers to the Book of the Redeemed; and the word “Lamb” refers to the fact that all are saved by placing their Faith and Trust in Jesus Christ and what He did for us at the Cross).

27) Comments: (Chapter 21:27); Now John said that there shall in no wise enter into it nor not anything that defileth, neither, whatsoever worketh abomination or make a lie. Now this simply means that there will be no sin enter into Heaven. The open gates show that security measures are no longer necessary. (Read) (Isaiah 60:11); Now the day is continuous since the darkness never comes. Only the redeemed and the glorified people will have access to or to dwell in the New Jerusalem. (Read)(Revelation 22:15); (Isaiah 52:1); (Ezekiel 44:9); (II Peter 3:13); (I Corinthians 6:9-10); Now remember, no sinful thing that defileth will enter into our God’s presence. Now once again, we are confronted with the significance of having our names written in the “Lamb’s Book of Life” and assuring us that our Lord Jesus Christ knows each believer personally, by his name. Not everyone will be allowed into the New Jerusalem. But only those whose names; that are written; in the Lamb’s “book of life.” Now don’t think that you will get in just because of your back-ground, your personality, or your good behavior. Now I tell you that “eternal life is available to you only because of what our Lord Jesus, the Lamb of God has done. Please trust him today to secure your citizenship in his New Creation.

A) Now this great city has no need of the sun or the light of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God will illuminated it and Jesus will be its light. Now the source of energy for lighting this great city will always be the glory of our God and our Savior Jesus because they will out shine the sun.

B) Now its gates shall not ever be shut at all by day because there is no night there. And the righteousness ones shall bring the glory and the honor of all the nations into it.

Also there shall by no means enter this city that defiles it or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

C) Now as we come to the end of this chapter twenty-one in the book of Revelations, I would like to ask you a question about the condition of “you’re Soul”. If you were to die before this day comes to an end. “Where would your Soul spend eternity at? Now this is probably the most important question in your life. Would you like to ask Jesus to save you now? If so just keep on reading and the next few verses will tell you how to be saved.

Now all you have to do is just sincerely pray a simple prayer like this one here. “Please God, I confess to you my sins and need Jesus in my life right now. I will turn away from my sins and place my Faith in your Son Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.”

Your, Brother in Christ
