The Bible Study on the Book of Daniel Chapter 9

Introduction: In this chapter 9 we have, Daniel’s prayer for the restoration of the Jews who were in captivity, in which he confesses their sins, and acknowledges the justice of God in their calamities, but pleads God’s promises of mercy which he had yet in store for them in (verses 1–19). Also Daniel, understanding from the prophecies of Jeremiah that the seventy years of captivity was now terminating. He pours out his soul in fervent prayer to his God, and earnestly supplicates pardon and restoration for his captive people in (verses 1-12). When thus supplicating God in the behalf of the people of Israel. Then the Angel Gabriel is sent to inform him of the seventy prophetic weeks, or four hundred and ninety natural years, which should elapse from the date of the edict to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple to the death of the Messiah in (verses 20-27); and a prophecy most exactly fulfilled by the event, according to the computation of the best chronologies. Here Dean Prideaux states the commencement of these seventy prophetic weeks to have been in the month Nisan, and in the year of the Julian period 4256, which corresponds with A.M. 3546, B.C. 458, according to the Ushering account. How awfully that the Jews were blinded, who, were in contradiction to so clear a prophecy, but still expect the Messiah who was cut off, and, after suffering, is entered into His glory!

I) Daniel’s Vision of Seventy Weeks of Years; His Confession, And Prayer for Himself and Israel.

A. An immediate answer was sent to him by an Angel to his prayer, in which they were answered.

1. He is assured of the speedy release of the Jews out of their captivity (verses 20–23).

2. He is informed concerning the redemption of the world by Jesus Christ (of which that was a type), what should be the nature of it and when it should be accomplished in (verses 24–27). And it is the clearest, brightest, prophecy of the Messiah, in all the Old Testament.

Daniel: Chapter 9: (538 B.C.)

1) Read: (Daniel 9:1); in the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans; KJV
1) Explanation: (Daniel 9:1); in verse one; we find that Daniel, was about 15 years old when he went into captivity, then he would have been about 81 years old at the time of this vision. Now the name Ahasuerus was probably a Persian royal title rather than a personal name. It refers to an ancestor of Cyrus the Great or Governor Gubaru. (See note at (Daniel 5:31). Also Ahasuerus (485-465 B.C.) and the King mentioned in the book of Esther. (Esther 1:1);
1) Comments: (Daniel 9:1); in verse one; (Now this Vision was seen about a rear after the one in Daniel, chapter 8). (The unique glory of this Chapter and of this Prophecy is that this alone foretold the time of the Messiah’s appearing and the very year of His Crucifixion). This Chapter will detail Daniel’s third Vision: the seventy weeks of years (490 years and their application to Israel).
2) ) Read: (Daniel 9:2); in the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. KJV
2) Explanation: (Daniel 9:2); in verse two; here Daniel understood by the books that the prophecy referred to here is found in (Jeremiah 25:12); and (Jeremiah 29:10). The people must have been satisfied of the Divine inspiration of the Prophet Jeremiah, or his prophecies would not have been so speedily collected nor so carefully preserved. And it appears that there was a copy of them then in the hands of Daniel.
2) Comments: (Daniel 9:2); in verse two; this” seventy years” has nothing to do with the seventy weeks of years which Daniel will see in the Vision in the latter part of the Chapter 9 of (verses 24-27). The information of this Verse did not come about through Visions, but through the Scriptures which God had already given to Jeremiah. Daniel read the revelations of Jeremiah; by thoroughly studying this Prophecy, he understood the number of years of the exile. The information of seventy years of captivity followed by a restoration is recorded in (Jeremiah 25:11-12); (Jeremiah 29:1); (II Chronicles 36:21).
3) Read: (Daniel 9:3); and I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: KJV
3) Explanation: (Daniel 9:3); in verse three; the Prophet Daniel’s prayer was with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes. Now there are three customary ways to express sorrow and contrition and they can be found in the following scriptures. (Ezra 8:23); (Nehemiah 9:1); (Esther 4:1-3); and (Esther 4:12); (Job 2:12); and (John 3:5-6).
3) Comments: (Daniel 9:3); in verse three; Daniel was seeking God for the deliverance of Israel from this seventy-year captivity as was promised by the Lord. His prayer was based upon the Books in the Bible in (Leviticus Chapter 26); (II Chronicles Chapter 36); (Jeremiah Chapter 25) and 29).
4) Read: (Daniel 9:4); And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; KJV
4) Explanation: (Daniel 9:4); in verse four; Daniel was always praying to his God, (Jehovah), and making confessions to Him to keep the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments. Also fidelity and truth are the characteristics of God. Also He had never yet broken his engagements to his followers, and was ever showing mercy to men. Also the word covenant refers to the “Abrahamic Covenant” in which our God, (Jehovah) promised to preserve the Jewish people and provide them with a land and that piece of land is called Israel today. You can find this land in (Genesis 12:1-7); and in (Genesis 15:18-21).
4) Comments: (Daniel 9:4); in verse four; now there is a reference here to (Deuteronomy 7:9), from which the latter clause is quoted verbatim. This particular Chapter in Deuteronomy exhibits God’s love for Israel, and as always that love is his plea and Daniel appeals to it. As always, one should note the evidence of careful acquaintance with preceding Scripture.
5) Read: (Daniel 9:5); we have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments: KJV
5) Explanation: (Daniel 9:5); in verse five; we have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled. Now here is penitent confession of sin. When we seek for national mercies we ought to humble ourselves for national sins. Here are two things that aggravated their sins; the first, is that they had violated the laws that God had given them by Moses. The second; is that they had slighted the fair warming that God had given them by the prophets.
5) Comments: (Daniel 9:5); in verse five; Here Daniel includes himself in this confession of wrong doing. Even by departing from your Precepts and from Your Judgments, defines what sin is. It is a departing from the Word of God. Now as it was then, so it is now! It is summed up in the word of “rebellion”.
6) Read: (Daniel 9:6); neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. KJV
6) Explanation: (Daniel 9:6); in verse six; the prophets of the Bible are great men of our God. Now God used these Prophets to tell His people of events and things that will happen in the future.
Also these prophets are used by God to warn the kings, and our fore-fathers, and His people of certain things that is going to happen if they do not repent of their sins.
6) Comments: (Daniel 9:6); in verse six; Judah had suffered seventy years of captivity because she would not listen to the one true Prophet, Jeremiah. Who was raised up by the Lord; and they rather heeded the false prophets.
7) Read: (Daniel 9:7); O LORD, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee. KJV
7) Explanation: (Daniel 9:7); in verse nine; here the Prophet Daniel, prays for all Israel, that are near, and them that are far off. Also he prays both for Judah and Israel. Now the latter were more dispersed, and had been much longer in captivity. (But unto us confusion of faces, refers to shame). (Now sin always brings shame, and only God can take it away).

7) Comments: (Daniel 9:7); in verse seven; here the Prophet Daniel, prays for all God’s people for mercies and for their forgiveness. Here is a self-abasing acknowledgment of the righteousness of God in all the judgments brought upon them. Also Daniel acknowledges that it was sin that plunged them in all these troubles. Now when Israel is dispersed though all the countries about, and so weakened, impoverished, and exposed. And it is because of their trespass that they have trespassed; and they mingled themselves with the nations that they might be debauched by them, and now God (Jehovah), mingles them with the nations that they might be stripped by them.
8) Read: (Daniel 9:8); O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. KJV
8) Explanation: (Daniel 9:8); in verse eight; Now to us belongs confusion of faces as at this day in (verse 7); and we lie under the shame of the punishment of our iniquity, for shame is our due. If Israel had retained their character, and had continued a holy people, they would have been high above all nations in praise, and mane, and honor in the book of (Deuteronomy 26:19). But now that they have sinned and done wickedly confusion and disgrace belong to them, to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the inhabitants both of the country and of the city, for they have been all alike guilty before our God. And it belongs to all Israel. And both to the two tribes, that are near the rivers of Babylon, and to the ten tribes, that are afar off, in the land of Assyria. “Now confusion belongs not only to the common people of our land, but also to our kings, our princes, and our fathers (verse 8), who should have set a better example, and have used their authority and influence for the checking of the threatening torrent of vice profaneness.
8) Comments: (Daniel 9:8); in verse eight; The Lord will only accept from the truly repentant heart. Now we have sinned against You O Lord because all sin, in one way or the other, and is directed against God.
9) Read: (Daniel 9:9); To the Lord our God belongs mercies and forgivenessese, even though we have rebelled against him; KJV
9) Explanation: (Daniel 9:9); in verse nine; Here is a believing appeal to the mercy of God, and to the ancient tokens of his favor to Israel, and the concern of his own glory in their interests. First it is some comfort to them (and not a little) that God has been always ready to pardon sin in (verse 9). To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness; this refers to that proclamation of his name, (Exodus 34:6-7), The Lord God, is gracious and merciful, and forgiving iniquity.
9) Note: (Daniel 9:9); in verse nine;It is very encouraging to poor sinners to recollect that mercies belong to God, as it is convincing and humbling to them to recollect that righteousness belongs to him. And those who give him the glory of his righteousness may take to themselves the comfort of his mercies, (Psalms 62:12). There are abundant mercies in God, and not only forgiveness but forgiveness’s; he is a God of pardons in (Nehemiah 9:17); he multiplies to pardon, (Isaiah 55:7). Though we have rebelled against him, yet with him there is mercy, pardoning mercy, even for the rebellious.
And it is likewise a support to them to think that God had formerly glorified himself by delivering them out of Egypt; so far he looks back for the encouragement of his faith in (verse 15). “Thou hast formerly brought thy people out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and wilt thou not now with the same mighty hand bring them out of Babylon? Were they then formed into a people, and shall they not now be reformed and new-formed? Are they now sinful and unworthy, and were they not so then? Are their oppressors now mighty and haughty, and were they not so then? “And has not God said that their deliverance out of Babylon shall outshine even that out of Egypt?” (Jeremiah 16:14-15).
9) Comments: (Daniel 9:9); in verse nine; we find that His mercy will always be shown and forgiveness will always be tendered if the individual, irrespective as to what has been done, will only humble himself before God. Please compare the Footnotes of (Daniel 9:17); with this verses of (Ezekiel 14:12-20).

10) Read: (Daniel 9:10); neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord, our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants, the prophets.

10) Explanation: (Daniel 9:10); in verse ten; now once again, the Word of God is held up as the guideline for all living. And it is called “the Voice of the LORD our God”.

10) Comments: (Daniel 9:10); in verse ten; here the Prophet Daniel tells the people that they have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants. So Daniel prays and confesses the sins of the people as their representative. Also God (Jehovah) God of the one and only true all mankind, and He is the only God of the nation of Israel. Also the Word of God tells us that the Jewish people are the apple of His eye. But here God has warmed the Israelites that they have failed to keep His covenant and disobeyed the law. Also they would be taken into exile by a foreign nation and restored only because of His faithfulness and mercy. Also the rebellious Christians can never do enough to reconcile with God. Now only because of God’s mercy and faithfulness are they forgiven and restored.

11) Read: (Daniel 9:11); Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him. KJV
11) Explanation: (Daniel 9:11); in verse eleven; therefore the curse is poured upon us because we have sinned against God. Now it is probable that he alludes here to the punishment of certain criminals by pouring melted metal upon them. Also he uses the word “tittach,”and it is poured out, like melted metal, for this is the proper meaning of the root nathach.
11) Comments: (Daniel 9:11); in verse eleven; when a curse is promised for certain action, it will be done according to God’s Word, just as a reward is granted for obedience. Also Daniel realized that it was Israel’s disobedience that resulted in exile. And as the Law of Moses had warned them. Please read these scriptures; (Leviticus 26:27-33); and (Deuteronomy 29:63-68).
12) Read: (Daniel 9:12); and he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem. KJV
12) Explanation: (Daniel 9:12); in verse twelve; now here, “it is not some of the common troubles of life that we are complaining of, but that which has in it special marks of divine displeasure, for under the whole Heaven has not been done as has been done upon Jerusalem.” Also it is Jeremiah’s lamentation in the name of the church, and this, “was ever sorrow like unto my sorrow?” which we must suppose another similar question. “Was ever sin like unto my sin?” And he puts shame upon the whole nation, from the highest to the lowest.
12) Comments: (Daniel 9:12); in verse twelve; our God will always confirm His Word and curse those who sin and bless those who obey Him in (Galatians 6:7-8). His attitude in this respect does not change from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant.
That we are presently under Grace and God does not look at sin as He once did is a facetious idea indeed! God’s attitude toward sin has never changed and in fact cannot change.
13) Read: (Daniel 9:13); as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth. KJV
13) Explanation: (Daniel 9:13); in verse thirteen; the prophet Daniel tells us that as it is written in the Law of Moses, and that all this evil is come upon us. Because we have not made our prayer before the Lord our God, and we must turn from our sins, and understand His truth. I believe that this prayer is the longest prayer in the Old Testament and it was used as a model for other prayers in the Bible. Now this prayer is found in the book of Nehemiah chapter one and this prayer started at verse 3 and ends at verse eleven. Here is Nehemiah’s Prayer and it stars at verse three below.
3) And they said unto me, the remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire. (Nehemiah 1:3);
4) And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven, (Nehemiah 1:4);
5) And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: (Nehemiah 1:5);
6) Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned. (Nehemiah 1:6);
7) We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses. (Nehemiah 1:7);
8) Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations: (Nehemiah 1:8);
9) But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there. (Nehemiah 1:9);
10) Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand. (Nehemiah 1:10);
11) O LORD, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer. (Nehemiah 1:11);
13) Comments: (Daniel 9:13); in verse thirteen; the idea of this verse is that Judah would not repent although repeatedly warned before the judgment; and they also would not repent after the judgment. “And understand Your Truth,” this means that the Truth here is extended to its fullest meaning in “God’s Supreme Reality”. Now God, being God, implies necessarily that every word of Promise or Threatening He utters is true. And veracity and faithfulness are equally involved in Jehovah being God.

14) Read: (Daniel 9:14); Therefore hath the Lord watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the Lord our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice. KJV
14) Explanation: (Daniel 9:14); in verse fourteen; we know as believers that in our Lord Jesus Christ, watched upon the evil. Also He imputes the continuance of the judgment to their incorrigibleness. “But we have not entreated the face of our Lord our God. And we have no care to make our peace with God and reconcile ourselves to Him.” Now if men were brought rightly to understand God’s truth, and to submit to the power and authority of it, then they would turn from the error of their ways.
14) Comments: (Daniel 9:14); in verse fourteen; the idea is here; what the Lord has done is the right thing to have done, and His Righteousness is vindicated in judgment on sin that refuses to be repented of. Also Daniel spoke about how our God continually tried to bring Israel back to himself. And yet even after disaster struck them, they refused to obey Him. But we know that our God still uses circumstances, and other people, and, most importantly, his Word to bring his people back to Him. Then I would like to ask you this question. What would it take for our God (Jehovah), to get your attention?
15) Read: (Daniel 9:15); And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly. KJV
15) Explanation: (Daniel 9:15); in verse fifteen; Here we have, told that the deep impressions which these visions made upon the prophet. God in them put honor upon him, and gave him satisfaction, yet not without a great allay of pain and perplexity in (verse 15). I Daniel was grieved in my spirit, in the midst of my body. The word here used for the body properly signifies a sheath or scabbard, for the body is no more to the soul; that is the weapon; it is that which we are principally to take care of. The visions of my head troubled me, an again in (verse 28), my cogitations much troubled me. The manner in which these things were discovered to him quite overwhelmed him, and put his thoughts so much to the stretch that his spirits failed him, and the trance he was in tired him and made him faint. The things themselves that were discovered amazed and astonished him, and put him into a confusion, till by degrees he recollected and conquered himself, and set the comforts of the vision over against the terrors of it.
15) Comments: (Daniel 9:15); in verse fifteen; the phrase, “And have gotten you renown, as at this day”, it is an exact quotation from (Jeremiah 32:20), as in the original Text. This short phrase, “Your people,” tells us that Israel, even in apostasy and dispersion, was considered the chosen People of God. Now in the sense of the Promises made to the Patriarchs and Prophets of old, they still fit this category. However this designation has to do only with the Promises and Covenants of God, and in no way specifies Salvation.
16) Read: (Daniel 9:16); O LORD, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us. KJV
16) Explanation: (Daniel 9:16); in verse sixteen; His earnest desire to understand the meaning of them in (verse 16). I came near to one of those that stood by, to one of the angels that appeared attending the Son of man in his glory, and asked him the truth (the true intent and meaning) of all this. Note, it is a very desirable thing to take the right and full sense of what we see and hear from God; and those that would know must ask by faithful and fervent prayer and by accomplishing a diligent search. The key that was given him, to let him into the understanding of this vision. The angel told him, and told him so plainly that he made him know the interpretation of the thing, and that made him understand somewhat more at easy.
16) Comments: (Daniel 9:16); in verse sixteen; Now here Daniel is asking that the “anger” of the Lord, which has been poured out for the last seventy years on “Jerusalem; and “Your people; be abated). (The appeal is made to God’s Righteousness, because now the seventy years were nearing their end, and God’s Righteousness is involved in the time not being exceeded).
17) Read: (Daniel 9:17); Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake. KJV
17) Explanation: (Daniel 9:17); in verse seventeen; here the prophet Daniel is asking our God, to hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake. And by using the phrase, “causing thy face to shine” this gives us proof that thou art reconciled to us.
17) Comments: (Daniel 9:17); in verse seventeen; Daniel is calling the Lord to the petition of the Psalmist, where Asaph said, “Turn us again; 0 God, and cause Your Face to shine; and we shall be save in (Psalms 80:3). This has reference to the Blessings of God.
18) Read: (Daniel 9:18); O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousness’s, but for thy great mercies. KJV
18) Explanation: (Daniel 9:18); in verse eighteen; here Daniel begged for mercy, not for help, because he knew that his people deserved God’s wrath and punishment. Then God sends His help, not because we deserved it, but it was because he wants to show great mercy. But if our God would refuse to help us because of our sin, how could we complain? Now when God sends mercy and when we deserve punishment, how can we withhold our praise and thanksgiving?
18) Comments: (Daniel 9:18); in verse eighteen; God’s Blessings are not given to us because we deserve them. But because, in fact, we really; do not deserve them.
19) Read: (Daniel 9:19); O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name. KJV
19) Explanation: (Daniel 9:19); in verse nineteen; here thy city and thy people are called by thy name. Also the Holy city, which is the city of the great King. Now I think it scarcely possible for any serious man to read these impressive and pleading words without feeling a measure of the Prophet’s earnestness.
19) Comments: (Daniel 9:19); in verse nineteen; Daniel repeatedly uses the title of, Adonai, in saying; “0 Lord, hear”. The short sentences give a feeling of intensity to prayer suitable to the circumstances.

II) In the next part of Daniel; we will learn about Gabriel’s Interpretation of the Vision of the Seventy Weeks.
20) ) Read: (Daniel 9:20); And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God; KJV
20) Explanation: (Daniel 9:20); in verse twenty; here is Daniel’s prophecy of the Seventy Weeks staring in (Daniel 9:24-27); is in the portion of his book in chapters 7 through 12. This part reveals God’s divine program for the kingdoms of this world. Also in Daniel declared that Jerusalem has been called by God’s Name, and has been chosen by God. Actually, it be the capital of His Eternal Kingdom on Earth. (Psalms 2:6); (Psalms 48:2); (Psalms 87:2); (Psalms 102:16); (Psalms 132:13); and (Isaiah 2:2-4); (Ezekiel Chapter 48); and (Zechariah Chapter 14).

20) Comments: (Daniel 9:20); in verse twenty; now while I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy hill of my God. Here our Lord God is very ready to hear prayer and give an answer of peace. And those that would be acquainted with our Lord Jesus Christ and His grace must be much in prayer.
In order to keep up our communion with God, and we must not only be forward to speak to God, but as forward to hear what He has to say to us. Also when we have prayed, we must look up to Him, and He will look after our prayers. But we must set ourselves upon our watchtowers too.

20) Extra-Comments: (Daniel 9:20); in verse twenty; now while Daniel was speaking and praying, and I was confessing my sin and the sins of my people Israel. It was then that he shall stand up in his estate as a raiser of taxes. Now it was Seleucus Philopater that succeeded his father Antiochus. He then sent his treasurer Heliodorus to seize the money deposited in the temple of Jerusalem, which is here called the glory of the kingdom. And he was so cramped to pay the annual tax to the Romans, that he was obliged to burden his subjects with continual taxes. Now it was said, that he shall be destroyed, neither in anger and fighting against an enemy, nor in battle at the head of his troops. But he will be destroyed basely and treacherously, by the hand of Heliodorus, his treasurer, who hoped to reign in his place.
21) Read: (Daniel 9:21); Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. KJV
21) Explanation: (Daniel 9:21); in verse twenty-one; the Angel Gabriel in (Daniel 8:16); is here that called a man because he appeared in human form. And if the temple still stood, then the time of the evening oblation would have been between 3.00 and 4.00 P.M. Also the Angel Gabriel was instructed to make him understand the interpretation of the vision. Please read this scripture in the book of (Daniel 8:16);
21) Comments: (Daniel 9:21); in verse twenty-one; now once again, “Gabriel” is sent to Daniel’s side. The phrase, “About the time of the evening Oblation.,” referred to 3 p.m., which was the time of the evening Sacrifice; however, this does not imply that those Offerings were made in Babylon, but simply put that, through the nearly seventy years that had intervened since the fall of Jerusalem. Now the sacred hour had been kept in remembrance and possibly as one consecrated to prayer.
22) Read: (Daniel 9:22); and he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. KJV
22) Explanation: (Daniel 9:22); in verse twenty-two; the Angel Gabriel, had come to inform Daniel that he had come forth to give him skill and understanding. Now in all of the Bible, only Daniel is referred to as a man greatly beloved in (Daniel 10:11-19). Also he was the champion of his people in exile.
22) Comments: (Daniel 9:22); in verse twenty-two; here God informs Daniel that He has come, “To give you skill and understanding, this refers to the future of Israel and last day events.
23) Read: (Daniel 9:23); at the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. KJV
23) Explanation: (Daniel 9:23); in verse twenty-three; at the beginning of your prayers, the word giving an answer went forth, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved. Therefore consider the matter and understand the vision.

23) Comments: (Daniel 9:23); in verse twenty-three; the study of Bible Prophecy was not for Daniel a mere intellectual entertainment, but it was moral and spiritual nourishment for his soul).

24) Read: (Daniel 9:24); Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. KJV
24) Explanation: (Daniel 9:24); in verse twenty-four; the prophecy of the “seventy weeks” is the major biblical prophecy about future events which are related to the nation of Israel and from the decree to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem to the first and second comings of the Messiah. Now each “week” the (Hebrew shavuah) is a unit of seven years, and the seventy “sevens” constitute a total of 490 years? These six things below are predicted regarding the Jews that will occur during these 490 years.
1) The first prediction is that their transgression, will be finished.
2) The second prediction is that their “sins” will also end.
3) The third prediction is that their “reconciliation for iniquity” will be made.
4) The fourth prediction is that their “everlasting righteousness” will become a reality.
5) The fifth prediction is that “their prophecy” will be sealed up.
6) The sixth prediction is that the “Most Holy” will be anointed.
24) Extra Comments: (Daniel 9:24); in verse twenty-four; also these six things will not be completely fulfilled until the entire 490 years transpire. But some biblical scholars suggest that the first sixty-nine “weeks” are (483 years) began with the decree that was issued to Nehemiah to rebuild Jerusalem in 445-444 B. C. and ended during the week of Jesus was crucifixion. Remember some suggest that a gap apparently exists in this prophecy between the sixty-ninth and the seventieth weeks. But there are many prophecy scholars believe that this gap corresponds with the church Age; therefore, as long as the Church Age continues the “seventieth week of Daniel” will remain in the future. Now according to this teaching, after Jesus Christ raptures His Church, then the clock of God’s judgment will count off the final “week” of Daniel. This “seventieth week” of Daniel in verse 27, then this is synonymous with the seven-year Tribulation. In verse twenty-four; (“Seventy weeks are determined upon your people”, and this actually means seventy sevens, which translates into 490 years). (This period of time has to do with “your people” and “your holy city,” referring to the Jews and Jerusalem). (The Second Coming of Christ and their acceptance of Him will “finish the transgression). Now to make reconciliation (atonement) for iniquity, this refers to the fact that Israel will not only accept Christ at the Second Coming but will.
25) Read: (Daniel 9:25); Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. KJV
25) Explanation: (Daniel 9:25); in verse twenty-five; we learn about the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. Here the going forth of the commandment to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. Now this may refer to the decree of Cyrus in the book of Ezra chapter one. Also the decree of Darius in Ezra chapter six, and the decree of Artaxerxes in Ezra seven, or the decree of Artaxerxes in the book of Nehemiah two. Please read these two scriptures in God’s Hold Word.
25) Comments: (Daniel 9:25); in verse twenty-five; If one is to notice in this Scripture, the “seventy weeks” of years is broken up into two periods. One “shall be seven weeks” (49 years) and the other will be “threescore and two weeks” (434 years) totaling 483 years. “That from the going forth of the Commandment to restore and rebuild Jerusalem”, now this is the beginning of this 490 year period. However, from that time until it was actually finished was some 141 years. Actually, the clock stopped and started several times in this 141-year period, totaling same 49 years when work was truly in progress, comprising the first seven weeks of years (49 years). The second block of time started at the end of the 49 years and ended with the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ, which was 434 years.
Now when you combine, as stated, the 49 years with the 434 years it brings the total to 483 years. Now the third block of time, which we will study in the last verse, will be the last week of years, totaling seven years, which will make up the Great Tribulation period, and that concluding Daniel’s Prophecy of seventy weeks of years. Now here again, it must be remembered that these 490 years did not run consecutively. There were stoppages, as stated, in the first 49 years; then there has been a huge halt of nearly 2,000 years from the time that Christ was crucified, which has not concluded yet. Now we must remember that in other words, the last week of years (seven years is yet to come).
26) Read: (Daniel 9:26); And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. KJV
26) Explanation: (Daniel 9:26); in verse twenty-six; now the of Daniel, was written in the Sixth century B.C. which predicted not only the precise date of the Messiah’s coming in verse 25. But also that the Messiah would be put to death some time before the destruction of Jerusalem in (A.D. 70). This was fulfilled when our Lord Jesus was crucified in (A.D. 33). (But some say that it was in the year (A.D. 30), according to some interpreters). Also the prince that shall come, probably is a reference to the future ruler which is described as the little horn in (Daniel 7), and he is also known as the beast or the Antichrist. Now here he is not said to be the one to destroy Jerusalem and the temple; but it is his people who will do it. Also (Daniel 7), clearly viewed this ruler as coming from the fourth major world power, or Rome, this prophecy predicts that the Romans would destroy Jerusalem, just as they did in (A.D. 70). There appears to be a significant time gap from the end of the sixty-ninth week to the beginning of the seventieth week.
26) Comments: (Daniel 9:26); in verse twenty-six; the phrase, “And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off,” this gives us the exact time, even the very year, that the Messiah would be crucified. The words, “cut off,” refer to His Crucifixion. “But if not for Himself,” this refers to Jesus dying for mankind and taking upon Himself the penalty for mankind. In other words, He did not die for crimes He had committed, but rather for the crimes mankind had committed. “And the people of the prince who shall come shall destroy the City and the Sanctuary,” this refers to the Romans, who fulfilled this Prophecy in A.D. 70). However, the “prince,” as used here, actually refers to the Antichrist; who has not yet come, but will come from among the ten kingdoms that is yet to be formed inside the old Roman Empire territory. (The next verse will prove this).
27) Read: (Daniel 9:27); And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. KJV
27) Explanation: (Daniel 9:27); in verse twenty-seven; the final seven-year period, or the seventieth week will begin when he “the coming prince,” shall confirm the covenant of peace with many in the leadership of Israel. Although some consider the prince to be the Messiah. But he is more accurately identified as the Antichrist, who will desecrate the future temple and put a stop to worship there. This covenant is yet future and will mark the beginning of a time of oppression of the Jewish people called, “the time of Jacob’s trouble” in (Jeremiah 30:7); or the Tribulation period in (Matthew 24:29); and (Mark 13:24); in the midst of the week, or after the first three and one-half years. But the Antichrist will break his covenant with Israel. Also this will lead to a time of unprecedented persecution of the Jewish people in (Matthew 24:21); (Mark 13:19); and followers of our Lord Jesus Christ in (Revelation 7:14); which will last for another three and one-half years in these scriptures, (Daniel 7:25); (Revelation 11:2-3); (Revelation 12:14); and (Revelation 13:5). When the Antichrist breaks his covenant, he will also put a stop to sacrifice in the rebuilt temple in (Revelation 7:25); and will commit “the abomination of desolation,” in (Matthew 24:15). When he does this the Antichrist will desecrate the temple and declaring that himself to be God, (II Thessalonians 2:4); and (Revelation 13:5-7). Now the Antichrist’s oppression and abominations will continue until for a period of time which God (Jehovah), has determined the amount of time that has been the pouring upon the one who makes desolate in (Revelation 11:45); and (Revelation 19:20).
27) Comments: (Daniel 9:27); in verse twenty-seven; “And he shall confirm, and this refers to the Antichrist. The phrase, “And in the midst of the weeks,” this refers to three and a half years, at which time the Antichrist will show his true colors and stop the Sacrifices in the newly built Temple. Now at that time, he will actually invade Israel, with all her suffering; and this will be her first defeat since her formation as a nation in the year of 1948. Even until the consummation, which means until the end of the seven year; Great Tribulation period. The phrase, “And that determined shall be poured upon the desolate,” this refers to all the Prophecies being fulfilled regarding the great suffering that Israel will go through the last three and a half years of the Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21-22).

A) Now this concludes our Bible Study on the ninth chapter of the Book of Daniel. Next week we will continue our lesson studies in the chapter ten of the Book of Daniel. Please be much in prayer for me as I try to teach this great book of the Bible.
B) Remember; if you are not saved our God has the power to save anyone that calls upon the name of Jesus Christ and repents of their sins. Now all that are lost need God’s power because we have a problem with sin. The Bible tells us that “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3:23).
C) Now you can find the way to Heaven in the book of (Romans 10:9). This scripture in the bible tells us that “If you confess with your mouth, that “Jesus is Lord,” and that you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
D) We all need to confess our sins and ask God for his forgiveness. When you confess to Jesus Christ as your Lord, then this involves an agreeing with God about your sin and your need for Salvation. You must repent of your own personal sins, by doing this you are willing to turn away from the direction in life in which you are going.
E) Now to “believe in your heart” is to place your faith in Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior, also you are trusting that Jesus died on the Cross to pay for your sins. But our God proves His own love for us in that while we were sill sinners, Jesus Christ died for all of us. (Romans 5:8).
F) Remember, if you would like to have Salvation in our Lord Jesus Christ, you sincerely pray a prayer like this one; “Please God, I confess to you my sins and I need for you to save me right now. I turn away from my sins and I place my faith in Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord of my life forever. Amen.”
G) Before we close chapter 9 of the book of Daniel, I would just like to say, I believe that all the scriptures are very important to all of God’s people and every Christian should know and keep them in his heart. I believe that our Lord Jesus said these scriptures in the book of (Matthew 22:37-39). Then one of Pharisees ask Jesus a question and he called Him Master. Which is the great commandment in the Law? Then Jesus said unto him, “Thou shalt love the Lord, thy God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” (Matthew 22:37); Now in verse 38, Jesus said, “This is the first and great commandment.” (Matthew 22:38); Here in verse 39, our Lord Jesus said, and the second is like it,
H) “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” (Matthew 22:39); Also our Lord Jesus said, this in verse 40, “On these two commandment’s hang all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22:40); Remember we that are believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, and know Jesus as our own personal Savior. Also we should give Him praise and thank Him every day of our life. Why? Because Jesus shed His precious blood on that old rugged Cross so that we all could be free and have eternal life with Him in Heaven.
But while we are waiting we must be telling everyone about God’s Salvation Plan. And that plan is called the “Gospel” or the “Good News,” this is the job of every born again believer that calls Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior.
I) Now in the book of Matthew, in chapter 28, these scriptures tells us that the disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them to go. (Matthew 28:16); and when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. (Matthew 28:17); and Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, All authority is given unto me in Heaven and in earth. (Matthew 28:18); In verse 19; Jesus said, go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, which is Jesus, and of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19); Also in verse 20, Jesus said, teaching them to observe all things, whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world, (age). Amen. (Matthew 28:20);
J) Now you have just finish reading the two scriptures in the book of (Matthew 28:19-20). Most people that are Christians go to church on Sunday morning and then go out to eat lunch or a late dinner. But I would like to ask everyone a few questions about whose job it is to tell the “Good News” or the “Gospel”? Most Christians believe that this is the job of the pastor because that why we pay him for. But then there are the other type of Christians that believe that this job belongs to the Deacon in the church. Well, guess what, I believe that telling the Gospel is my job and every born again believers that has accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. Yes that means all of us are commanded to go, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, which is Jesus, and of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19); Remember time is running out for all those that are not saved. Also I believe that we are living in those last days right now and we as Christians have very little time left to tell our love ones and those who may not be saved about our Lord Jesus Salvation Plan. And that plan is called the “Gospel” or the “Good News,” this is the job of every born again believer that calls Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior.
